Institute of Industry (IdeI)

The Institute of Industry (IdeI) trains professionals in Industrial Engineering, Technology of Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Economics and Political Economics. Research is done from a multidisciplinary perspective about the following conditions of the economical agents: technological, economic, social and political; emphasising in SMMEs. From its experience it provides services to the community.

Why an institute and what are the problems it deals with?

The Institute of Industry (IdeI) has as a central concern the production problems in the actual world emphasising on SMMEs.

Its basic functions are the following:

• Train professionals with a high scientific and technical level to cover the needs of human resources in different subjects linked to production.
• Research, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the economics, norms, technology and social conditions in which the economical actors develop, in order to improve knowledge about the real functionality of production.
• Provide technical support services to firms, companies, institutions, public services organisations and NGOs linked with productive and technological development.

Pedagogical proposal

Degrees of the Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento (UNGS) are organised in two cycles, which allows the students to organise their studies in an innovative way.

The first step is the University Adaptation Course of seven months. After which the students can choose between different specialisations on the General University Cycle, which gives a solid basic scientific training. The duration of the General University Cycle is two and a half years, which results in attaining a University Diploma. This diploma allows the student to study in the Institute of Industry in the following degrees: Industrial Engineering, Technology of Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Economics and Political Economics. The duration of the cycle is two and a half years.

Tutorial system

The UNGSgives the students the possibility to access a tutorial system, each student chooses a lecturer who acts as a tutor, in order to help the student during the studying process.

Scholarship system

An important scholarship system is at the disposal of the students. There are economic scholarships for degree students; scholarships in research and teaching for advanced students and graduates of the university and scholarships in academic management and community services.

Professional practice

The IdeI students have the possibility of being part of research projects, community services or internships in companies, something that allows them to gain a better experience in their field of study.

Advantages of studying in a University campus

The University has a modern campus where the students have access to lecture rooms distributed in the different premises, labs and auxiliary spaces to do different activities that students demand.

The scholars of the Institute of Industry have an assigned office where computers, Internet, printers and telephones are available. It also functions as a computer lab for advanced students where they can do professional activities.

Additionally, students are provided with the library in the UNGS, with a huge range of books and journals, continually updated, with a data retrieval service through Internet and access to external catalogues.

Research

The research of the IdeI aims to develop and generate knowledge about technological, institutional, labour and territorial aspects of the productive and competitive dynamic of the productive systems of the companies, as well as the diverse economic problems, industrial activity and sectors and economic policies that have an bearing on the socio-economic development in Argentina.

The IdeI has developed a broad and varied theoretical and applied research due to the need to generate a theoretical and research body in order to teach and intervene in the public debate and social issues.

The result of the research work of the IdeI manifests itself in many mediums, published by UNGSand in magazines, books and other kinds of texts, in order to do that the university has partnered with Argentinean and foreign publishers. This activity was, in part possible because of the connection with other institutions. In one hand, the link with national universities and research teams (Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Grupo Redes, ECLAC, Universidad Tecnológica Nacional), foreign universities and research teams (Universidad Complutense de Madrid-SECYB, University of Ferrara, Universidad Federal do Rio de Janeiro, University of Columbia-Cebrap, Gerpisa, Danish Research Unit Industrial Dynamics, University of Waxjo), and also, with national organisations (INDEC, SECYT) and international organisations and foundations (FUNDES, IDRC, IDB, OAS,PROCISUR, JICA, CIS of the University of Toronto, European Union, Alfa Programme, Columbus y el IFC of the World Bank).

Services

The professional services offered to the community by the IdeI are outlined in the institutional aims of the UNGS and assume a contribution of knowledge and technologies to them, at the same time contributing to teaching and research because of the participation of the research-teachers, students and graduates. The services given go from assessing and consultancy to direct work on the field, diagnosis and concrete intervention in the territory.

In this scenario, the IdeI is linked to prestigious organisations such as: Inter American Development Bank, Secretaría de Cooperación Iberoamericana, FUNDES International, International Cooperation Agency, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, University Policies Secretariat, Argentinean Federation of the Wood Industry (FAIMA), FLACSO Mexico, SEPYME, Superintendence of Work Risks.

Degree Offer

The pedagogical offer of the UNGScentres its attention on students learning and in orientating the research according to the curricular development of the objectives of each degree.

The degrees are organised in two cycles, which let the student to progressively advance in their decision and even change their initial choice:

a) The General University Cycle, two and a half years.

b) The Degree Cycle, two and a half years.

• Industrial Engineering
  This degree trains professionals capable of the design and operation of productive systems, in order to maintain them in productive, quality and secure conditions. Vocational training gives the students:
  • Central Scientific and technological knowledge to Engineering, with a high grade of excellence, and
  • Experimentation in companies that allow students to observe and contrast knowledge in the scope of future professional development.

• Industrial Economics
  The objective is to train professionals capable of understanding, analysing and resolving different economic problems specific to manufacturing activities. The academic training is interdisciplinary which completes the knowledge in diverse economic theories contributing to engineering, business administration, industrial organisation and other disciplines, with the purpose of facing diverse challenges of the economic problems in firms, in the different sectors and in the industrial activity.

• Political Economics
  The idea is to train professionals capable of working in the different economic areas, and prepare them to intervene in the diverse problems with a theoretical point of view as well as with a realistic one.
  Subjects include all the positions, ranging from those who analyse the beginnings of capitalism, the classics, Marx and Marxist contemporary studies; those who aim at economics with lower State participation -the neo-classics-, Keynes and his disciples, those who study the new technologies, globalisation, etcetera. And in every case, tackling Argentinean development issues.

• Manufacturing Technology Engineering
  The degree prepares professionals capable of applying strategies of automated manufacture, with the capacity to generate the integration between the diverse departments in companies, in order to optimise the already existent production system and to implement new systems to facilitated improvements in efficiency, general productivity, competitiveness and the quality of the goods or services generated by the company.

Postgraduate

• Masters in Economics and Industrial Development Specialising in SMMEs
  Academic Director: Hugo Kantis
  The Masters aims to train high quality professionals in economics and competitive development management areas, who are going to use this experience in the different labour areas where they work: companies, organisations dedicated to the promotion of productive development and universities.
  Diverse existing experiences at an international level contribute evidence about the role that SMMEs have in the modern socio-economic structure, standing out for its contribution to the generation of innovations, the creation of new jobs and guidance of the entrepreneurial capacities within society.
  In order to reach this kind of development it relies on strong management strategies both at company level and at the different private and public organisations that make up this environment.

• Masters in Science, Technology and Innovation Management
  Academic Director: Roberto Bisang
  The aim is to train and capacitate public workers, professionals, researchers and technicians who are interested in scientific, technological and innovative management activities. Training emphasises the acquisition of specific abilities related to:
  • The comprehension of the National Innovation System dynamics, morphologies, the people involved, its organisations and the way they act, its link with social, political and economic processes on the country and in the international scene.
  • The application of modern management techniques for complex organisations, adapted to public institutions or NGOs in the science, technology and innovation areas.
  • The development of pertinent methodologies and tools to strengthen and manage the link between public knowledge and private productive processes, in order to generate a diffusion of innovative efforts in the whole country and to create new companies in the local region.
