Academic offer
Two study cycles
The Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento (UNGS) assumes a pedagogical strategy aim that securing solid basic and specific training, which allows students to access the theoretical knowledge and actual information about critical issues, and graduate in optimum conditions to exercise the chosen profession.
The University’s teaching structure is organised in two cycles, as follows:
- General University Cycle, of five semesters, which gives a University Diploma in General Studies and is run by the Institute of Science, one of the four institutes which are part of the university. The General University Cycle gives five specialisations: in Exact Sciences, Human Science, Social Science, Industrial Technology and in Administration.
- The Degrees Cycle, degrees of five semesters and three in the Teaching Degrees for Secondary School Level. Its development is run by the rest of the institutes of the UNGS: the Institute of Human Development, the Institute of Industry and the Institute of Metropolitan Studies.
Advantages of a novel curricular structure
The structure of two cycles has the advantage of letting the students spread their capacities, broaden their training and find a better way to prepare themselves to succeed in their development of the degree they chose. Meanwhile in the traditional system the student has to choose a degree at the time of enrolment at the university – with the following frustration if that choice turns out to be wrong –, the UNGS lets its students choose a more general orientation during the first semesters, allowing for the choice of a more professional orientation at a later date. So, once they end the degree they can obtain other titles from the same General University Cycle.
The novel curriculum structure also favours the exchange between students with different interests and knowledge.
Form of entry
University Adaptation Course (CAU)
This is the main form of entry for new students to the UNGS, including those older than 25 without a complete secondary education that opt to embark on university studies. The Institute of Human Development handles its organisation and teaching and its study plans deal with the development of three subjects: Mathematics, Reading & Writing and a Science Workshops. This course is orientated to facilitate and strengthen the students’ entry process in the university life.
The CAUis mandatory to those who are interesting in studying in the UNGS, except for those who already have a degree or tertiary studies of four or five years.
The University Diploma in General Studies
On completion of the General University Cycle, the students obtain a diploma, which certifies their training in general studies. This certification accredits their knowledge in the following areas:
- Exact Science
- Industrial Technology
- Administration
- Social Science
- Human Science
The University Diploma in General Studies has an academic reach and marks the end of an important period of training for the students, that it permits them to continue their studies at the UNGS, as well as improve their possibilities of entering the work environment.
