Morir en las grandes pestes: estado, sociedad y representaciones sobre la muerte durante las epidemias de colera y fiebre amarilla en Buenos Aires (1856-1886)

This thesis studies the different dimensions that epidemics of cholera and yellow fever generated in the Buenos Aires society during the crisis that occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century. These dimensions are on the one hand collective representations about fear, honor, health, disease and death. On the other hand, there was also a specific way in which the State faced this epidemics, and did not appear in the later stories, that is why we analyzed it. Finally we investigated the incidence and impact of the epidemic in the funeral rituals, both during and after the plagues, trying to understand the dynamics of funeral rituals and their relationship with the Buenos Aires society.
