Sociabilidad y cultura de la clase media en la Buenos Aires de 1930: el barrio de Villa Devoto

This Masters dissertation explores and hopes to contribute to understand urban sociability in the main city of the Argentine Republic: Buenos Aires –the capital city- during the 1930s, taking as a case study the neighborhood of Villa Devoto. From a perspectives centered on gender and class dimensions, it examines its main civic association, local press and public festivities. We will argue that these spheres allowed women and men living in Villa Devoto to build bonds among them, forge a sense of friendship and solidarity, express their values and visions and claim for their aspirations. In so doing, they gradually developed and expressed an attachment to their place of residency. Our analysis is based on a diversity of sources: the official documents from the main civic society of Villa Devoto (newsletters and proceedings), local press, municipal records, and, to a lesser degree, national newspapers and magazines.
