Visualidades del cuerpo: imágenes mediáticas de activistas del movimiento de mujeres y diversidad sexual en Uruguay (2005‐2015)

The thesis focuses on the ways the visual representation of the bodies of activists for women’s rights and sexual diversity were constructed at a time, when new rights were introduced in Uruguay under the governments of president Tabare Vázquez (2005‐2010) and president José Mujica (2010‐2015). Based on a qualitative research methodology, the study undertakes a visual analysis of photographs published by two daily print media outlets, La Diaria and La República, the feminist supplement La República de las Mujeres, and two online media outlets, Montevideo Portal and El País Digital.

It is understood that, as part of the visual culture we live in, images legitimize a horizon of meanings, thereby enabling the formation of social identities and image‐building. The study deals with photo journalism as a means of mediating reality, with the narrative of the texts created by media pictures, and with their presence in the dialogue, negotiating and appropriation processes of society.
