Huertas urbanas en contexto: la cuestion ambiental en la ciudad de Buenos Aires

This study aims to understand the phenomenon of urban gardens implemented by various actors and social groups in the city of Buenos Aires considering three axes: the productive-economic, the legitimation in environmental terms and the disputes over the space. Across a micro-analytical, procedural and structural approach, it will show that gardens change meaning according to the dynamics of historical contexts, so that they represent more than just food production and their potential economical benefits. After a critical review of urban agriculture category at an international level and agricultural activities in a local level, this work analyses the conflict that occurred in -and by- the public space in two gardens, one originated during the 2001 crisis and another ten years later. Such analysis will reveal the existence of different urban natures and the importance of internalizing new skills through knowhow. Under the ethnographic study, the assumption about the "environmental subject" homogeneous and apolitical will be dismantled. Moreover, it will discuss the environmental narratives that are used with different and even antagonistic purposes.
